Born in the Corsaglia valley to a Gaulish hill-farming family of no particular standing, she married Tiberius Julius Politanus — a former publicanus (tax contractor) turned moneylender, mid-40s, besotted with her — at approximately sixteen. Over the five years since, she has taught herself, by force of will and considerable expense of her husband's money, to function in the social world of the municipium: temple donations, theatre patronage, civic dinners. She has moved from a mountain farm to a townhouse on a good street with new stucco and her name on a temple stone. She is not finished.
