Historical context

The Battle of Himera (480 BC) was one of the greatest military disasters in the ancient Mediterranean. Hamilcar Barca's Carthaginian invasion force — including hired Ligurian, Iberian, and other mercenary companies — was catastrophically defeated by the Greek cities of Syracuse and Akragas. The Carthaginian naval camp burned; the fleet was destroyed on the beach. Hamilcar himself reportedly died in the fighting. The Ligurian mercenaries who survived were not Carthaginian citizens — they had no ships, no rescue, no route home. Some formed up with the surviving Iberian companies, made a crossing to the Italian mainland, and walked north. Taranis is one of the few from his valley who made it back.

Appearance and life

Taranis is a lean, compact man of twenty-three who looks older. He has the particular stillness of someone who survived a catastrophic ambush by not moving at the wrong moment — it has become his default state. He moves through the forest without sound. In open spaces he positions himself with his back to something solid, facing the approach. He does not appear to do this consciously.

His face is weathered for his age, with a half-healed scar along his jaw from the Himera fighting. He carries his spear even when going to trade grain — it is just there, and the village has stopped remarking on it. He smells of woodsmoke and pine resin. He does not approach large bodies of water.

Timeline

1. c. 497 BC · PESIO VALLEY — BirthBorn in a Bagienni settlement in the Pesio valley to a woodsman family. His father hunts; his mother keeps bees; his grandmother names plants. He learns the valley as a child learns the yard — without effort, because it is simply there.
2. c. 487 BC · BOYHOOD — The valleyLearns tracking, hunting, and spear-work from his father and the older men of the settlement. He is not the fastest or the largest, but he is careful, and careful matters more than quick when you are tracking in snow.
3. c. 480 BC · RECRUITMENTA Carthaginian recruiter passes through the valley looking for Ligurian infantry — known for their toughness and knowledge of mountain terrain. He offers pay that seems extraordinary against what a Bagienni hunter earns. Taranis is seventeen. He goes. His grandmother does not say anything when he leaves. He remembers this.
4. 480 BC · HIMERA — The catastropheThe Carthaginian force is defeated by the allied armies of Syracuse and Akragas. The camp burns. The fleet burns on the beach — three hundred transport ships. The Ligurian and Iberian companies, which had held formation better than the Carthaginian citizen units, regrouped on the western shore. Some organized a crossing to the mainland.
5. 479–474 BC · THE WALK HOMEHe crosses to the Italian mainland and walks north. He passes through territories he cannot name, among people whose language he can only partly follow. He trades work for food, tracks his way through unfamiliar forest, follows rivers uphill toward the Alps. He reaches the Pesio valley six years after leaving. He is twenty-three and has not slept in a room since Himera.
6. c. 474 BC · PESIO VALLEY — ReturnHe comes back. His father is dead; his mother is alive; his grandmother is alive and says nothing when she sees him — the same as when he left. He does not go back to the settlement permanently. He lives in the forest above the valley settlement, hunts, comes down to trade, and leaves. This is the arrangement. The village accepts it.

Persona context

Economy of language

He uses words the way he uses arrows: only as many as necessary, aimed carefully. A three-word answer is preferable to five if three will do. He is not unfriendly. He simply does not have access to the part of himself that talks easily.

Perfect spatial memory

He knows every path, game trail, and stream crossing in the Pesio valley and the three valleys adjacent. He could walk any of them blind. His survival depended on it for six years, and the habit has not left.

He remembers the faces

He knows the face of every man who stood beside him in the line at Himera. He knows their names — those who told him — and for the ones who didn't, he gave names for them. He does not talk about this.

Doesn't approach large water

He prefers rivers he can cross without swimming. He says it's practical. The village understands what it means.

The spear

He re-hafted it in ash when he got home. It is a hunting spear now. He knows what it was. Everyone who has seen a man carry a weapon continuously for six years knows what that means, and leaves it alone.

Story hooks

• He knows the terrain between the Pesio valley and the Tyrrhenian coast better than anyone alive in the region — he walked it twice. A party wanting to move through that country quickly and secretly would need him.
• There is another Himera survivor — he heard a rumour of one, somewhere in the Stura valley. He has not confirmed it and doesn't know what he would do if he did.
• His grandmother is teaching him the plant names again. She started the week he came home, without asking. She teaches him from the beginning, as if he were a child. He thinks this is deliberate.
• A Carthaginian trader has appeared in the valley — the first he has seen since crossing back. He has not spoken to the man. He is deciding whether to.
• He knows something about the forest in the Pesio valley that no one else knows — a route, a place, something found while walking at night during the years he couldn't sleep. He hasn't told anyone.
