⚔ Draco

Historical context

In 750 AD the Exarchate of Ravenna fell to the Lombards under King Aistulf, ending Byzantine administrative control of northern Italy. Armenian soldiers were a common feature of Byzantine armies throughout the 7th–8th centuries — recruited from noble families as military obligation and stationed across the empire. A deserter from the Italian campaigns in 747–750 would have been formally classified as killed in action if the records were maintained at all, which, in the chaos of the Exarchate's final years, they frequently were not.

Appearance and life

Large, dark, and structured in the way of men who have been soldiers long enough for it to settle into the bone. Armenian colouring — deep-set eyes, heavy brow, a jaw that has taken at least two serious strikes and set imperfectly. The scar runs from the left jaw hinge toward his chin. He does not explain it. He is not a man of decorative silences; he simply does not consider an explanation necessary. His hands are a soldier's hands: scarred at the knuckles, capable of precision when precision is required.

He wears traveller's wool — dark brown, unremarkable, chosen for movement and not for warmth. He carries: a spathion (worn, well-maintained, hilt wrapped in new leather), a saxo at the belt, and a small bronze medallion of a saint he no longer prays to that he has carried for fourteen years and will not discuss. His posture is the erect economy of a man who learned to stand for inspections and has not unlearned it. On the road he is visible. In cover he is not.

Timeline

1. c. 718–722 AD · BIRTH — Tayk, ArmeniaBorn Tiridates, son of a minor nakharar family. The house is in decline — land reduced, obligations owed. He is given to the Byzantine army at sixteen as a military obligation.
2. c. 734–747 AD · BYZANTINE SERVICE — Italy campaignServes in the Byzantine forces in Italy through the final years of the Exarchate. Learns Greek and Latin to supplement his Armenian. Becomes what the men call Drakon: the one you send first.
3. c. 747 AD · DEFECTION — Outside GenoaLeaves his unit. The official record, if maintained, calls him killed in action. He has been careful to encourage this interpretation. Three days later on the road near Pedona he encounters a woman coming out of a convent. He breaks a wall to help her cross a difficult passage. He believed at the time that he was rescuing her. He still believes this.
4. c. 747–750 AD · THE VALLEY — Formation of the gangThree years of operational development. The gang forms around his military competence and, without anyone stating it explicitly, around Valdrada's decisions. He has been the enforcer since the first month. The leader, he believes, since the second.
5. c. 750 AD · CURRENT — The messageA Greek merchant named Eustathios has passed him word that his former unit — or its remnants — is near Genoa. He has kept the last message. He has read it four times. He has not decided what to do. He is aware that not deciding is itself a decision.

Persona context

Still as a decision

His default state is an economy of movement that men who don't know him mistake for slowness. He does not move until he knows where the movement ends. This applies to rooms, roads, and conversations alike.

Hot in the way of banked coals

The anger is not absent. It is stored. Three years of erasure has not made him calm. It has made him patient. There is a difference. He knows the difference. He does not explain it.

Loyal past the point of strategy

His one genuine vulnerability. He stayed when leaving would have been safer. He will stay again. He has decided that this is not a weakness. He may be wrong.

Pride folded down to function

He was the son of a nakharar house, however minor, however reduced. He carries none of the performance of this. What he kept is the internal register: he notices when he is being managed. He chooses, sometimes, not to act on it.

Does not explain himself

Not from coldness. From a habit formed in the Byzantine army, where explaining yourself in a room full of men who wanted you to be wrong was a tactical error. He has not yet worked out that this habit costs him things in rooms with only one other person.

Story hooks

• The message from Eustathios he kept mentions a name: a former officer asking after deserters by description rather than name. The description fits Draco. He has eleven days before the merchant passes through again.
• The gang member who was approached by the Lombard rider has not yet answered. Draco is watching him. Valdrada is watching Draco watch him. Neither has told the other what they are doing.
• He has started taking watch on the hill above Breolungi before dawn — two hours earlier than necessary. Valdrada has noticed the change in his sleeping pattern and has not asked. One of them will move first.
• Marta mentioned that a rider came through the upper Pesio asking about a group travelling with a foreign man, dark, large, possibly Greek. Draco does not know she told Valdrada first.
