Smuggler & Guide, 970 AD
🗡️ Taric
A historically grounded profile from the Bagienni valley of Piedmont, based on archaeological, literary, documentary, and local historical sources.
Historical context
Tanar, called Taric — half-Lombard, half-Saracen, mountain guide, smuggler, and courier — lives in the Corsaglia valley around 970 AD, the last generation of the Saracen threat. His mother Aldrada was a freewoman from a Lombard farming community in the upper Corsaglia valley; she was taken in a Saracen raid c. 942 AD, returned pregnant, raised the child alone, and died of fever when Taric was eleven. His father is unknown by name — from Fraxinetum, Arab or Berber or muwalladun. He left Taric his looks: dark copper curls, amber-green eyes, light brown skin, and dense dark freckles covering his face and forearms that every settlement from Augusta Bagiennorum to the hill villages knows how to name and does not know how to place. Fraxinetum — the Muslim stronghold on the Provençal coast — will be destroyed in 972, two years hence. Taric does not know this will change nothing about how people look at him. He moves things and people across sixty miles of mountain country that others cannot or will not cross.
Appearance and life
- Name
- Tanar, called Taric · Born Tanar — his mother named him for the river of the valley. People call him Taric. The Arabic shape of it is not accidental and not lost on him.
- Origin
- The Corsaglia valley · Born in a hill settlement above the Tanaro. His mother was Lombard. His father was Saracen, from Fraxinetum. Not by her choice.
- Territory
- Pesio to Tanaro — Corsaglia to Breolungi · Knows every pass, ford, cave, and goat path in sixty miles of mountain country.
- Age
- Mid-20s · Born c. 944–946 AD. Old enough to have grown up under the shadow of Saracen raids. Young enough that it shaped everything.
- Occupation
- Smuggler · Guide · Occasional knife · Moves things and people across territory that others cannot or will not cross.
- Legal standing
- Outcast — tolerated · No lord will formally employ him. Most will use him informally. The distinction matters to them. Not to him.
Persona context
- Economical
- Uses very few words. Has found, over twenty-five years, that words create obligations and records. He says what is necessary and nothing else. This is sometimes mistaken for stupidity and more often for menace. Both serve him.
- Precise judge of character
- Can place a man's intentions within a few seconds of watching him move, breathe, decide where to put his hands. This is not mystical. It is the accumulated data of a life in which misreading someone was always dangerous.
- Wise past his years
- Has the particular wisdom of someone who grew up without protection — a wide, unsentimental understanding of how people work, what they need, what they will do when those needs conflict.
- Not bitter — exactly
- There is something under the stillness that is not resignation and not anger but a steady, clear-eyed assessment of the world as it actually is, which he has decided is enough to work with. He does not rage at what he was born into. He navigates it.
- Privately curious
- The Arabic fragments he knows — picked up from trade contacts, from listening on the Saracen path — interest him in a way he cannot explain. He does not know if he is trying to find something or simply looking at a half-open door. He has not walked through it.
- Loyal at great cost
- Gives his loyalty rarely and in full. Anyone who earns it will find him an immovable fact of their landscape. This has happened twice in his life. Both times it cost him something he did not get back.
Sample voice
On his work:I know the passes. I know what the tolls are and where the men watching them sleep. That is what you are paying for.
On his face:I know what you see. It is not what I am. Whether that matters to you is your business. Whether it matters to me is mine.
On trust:I will do what I said I would do. That is all trust is. Everything else is sentiment.
